Winter hiking in the Pacific Northwest is a magical experience—misty forests, roaring waterfalls, and maybe even a dusting of snow make for unforgettable adventures. If you’re looking to embrace the crisp air and explore the great outdoors, here are some of the best winter hikes in the Portland Metro area and Southwest Washington.

1. Multnomah Falls & Wahkeena Falls Loop

Location: Columbia River Gorge, OR
Distance: 4.8 miles loop
Elevation Gain: 1,600 feet
Multnomah Falls is stunning year-round, but in winter, it takes on an enchanting quality. This loop offers breathtaking waterfall views and fewer crowds than in the summer months. Be sure to wear waterproof gear—mist and ice can make the trail slippery.

2. Silver Falls State Park - Trail of Ten Falls

Location: Silverton, OR
Distance: 7.2 miles loop
Elevation Gain: 800 feet
One of Oregon’s most iconic hikes, this trail takes you past (and even behind!) multiple waterfalls. Winter brings dramatic water flow and icy formations along the canyon walls, making it a photographer’s dream.

3. Cape Lookout Trail

Location: Tillamook, OR
Distance: 4.7 miles out-and-back
Elevation Gain: 810 feet
This coastal hike offers breathtaking ocean views and a chance to spot migrating whales in the winter months. While the trail can be muddy, the reward is an incredible vantage point overlooking the Pacific.

4. Latourell Falls Loop

Location: Columbia River Gorge, OR
Distance: 2.4 miles loop
Elevation Gain: 520 feet
An easy, family-friendly hike, this loop features moss-covered trees, a picturesque bridge, and a striking waterfall. It’s a great option for a shorter winter outing.

5. Angel’s Rest

Location: Columbia River Gorge, OR
Distance: 4.5 miles out-and-back
Elevation Gain: 1,500 feet
If you’re up for a bit of a challenge, Angel’s Rest offers a rewarding panoramic view of the Columbia River Gorge. Be prepared for windy conditions at the summit, but the scenery makes it well worth it.

6. Lacamas Lake Loop

Location: Camas, WA
Distance: 3.5 miles loop
Elevation Gain: 200 feet
For a more relaxed winter hike, Lacamas Lake offers a scenic, relatively flat trail that winds around the water, past waterfalls, and through lush forest. It’s an ideal spot for a peaceful winter stroll.

7. Hamilton Mountain

Location: Beacon Rock State Park, WA
Distance: 7.5 miles loop
Elevation Gain: 2,100 feet
A great option for those seeking a moderate-to-strenuous hike, Hamilton Mountain features stunning views of the Gorge, waterfalls, and wild rock formations. Snow and ice can be present at higher elevations, so check conditions before heading out.

Winter Hiking Tips:

  • Dress in Layers: The PNW’s winter weather can be unpredictable—layer up to stay warm and dry.

  • Check Trail Conditions: Some trails can be icy or closed due to storms—always check before heading out.

  • Bring Traction Devices: Microspikes or Yaktrax can help with slippery sections.

  • Start Early: Daylight is limited in winter, so plan accordingly.

  • Leave No Trace: Stay on designated trails and pack out everything you bring.

Winter hiking in the Portland Metro area and SW Washington offers a chance to experience the region’s natural beauty in a whole new way. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, taking in coastal views, or trekking through lush forests, there’s an adventure waiting for you! Happy hiking!
